Drake - Scorpion First Disk Album Review
Standout Line of The Album: "Ya'll kill X but let Zimmerman live, its over."
Song by song breakdown full review at end:
Survivor:
Drake comes in with a chill mellow vibe he does all so often. This track had me yearning for more. however. Rating: 7
Nonstop:
This one had me hooked immediately, as Drake glides in with that nonchalant flow over up and coming producer, Tay Keith production. This definitely one you'll be wanting to put at full volume at the pregame, with an infectionous flow you can rap along to. Rating:9
Elevate:
Sure Drake hits some melodic notes on this one that almost gives you those Take Care vibes, i was not a fan. This ones for the females, and thats okay, an album with versatility is a good thing. Not to much else to say on this one. Rating: 6
Emotionless:
Without being too much of a hater, while still trying to be a critic, I'm bored 30 seconds into this one. He even adresses Pusha's accusation of Drake hiding a child from the world. He responds claiming "[he] wasnt hiding his kid from the world [he] was just "hiding the world from his kid. Wack IMO. Rating: 6
God's Plan:
Not gonna touch too much on this one considering we all know its a banger. Rating:9
I'm Upset:
I'll admit, when Drake first dropped this i was like, Drake wtf you doin man. But, the song and especially the production grew on me. It's a fun decent song to throw on in the whip. It was produced by OOGIE MANE, a 20 year old producer who recently landed his first major placement and platinum record with "Look Alive" by Blocboy jb feat Drake. Rating: 8
8 out of 10:
When I first listened to this one it felt like I had already heard it. Not necessarily bad though, I really ended up vibing to this one. Liked the flow switches, which kept me enganged throughout the song. Rating: 8
Mob Ties:
Right of the bat, you can tell this one will be pushed as one of the singles from this disc. Great blending of aggressive and melodic vocals from Drake and his engineer here. We gettin an unapologetic Drake on this one. Rating: 8
Can't Take a Joke:
Smooth, on beat, catchy, inventve. Everything I look for in new hip-hop music. One of my favorites off the albums and will definitely be getting thrown in rotation on the AUX. Rating: 9
Sandra's Rose:
Again, this one just isn't for me, nothing new. Maybe its for the ladies, not to sure. This one gets a Rating: 6 from me.
Talk up:
Ironic, because it's on a track with Jay-Z, I am hearing a lot of new age rap influence on this one. Drake comes through flexing comfortably over the sampled, trap production. Jay Z's verse was very solid and added a good bit to the track. Also had the standout line of the album which is listed near the top of the page. Rating: 8
Is There More:
This is only the first disc, yet I feel like I've heard this song three times on this project alone. Nothing standout to me, dissapointing outro to the first disk, Rating:6
Quick 1st disk synopsis:
Not hearing too much development or really anything too exciting except for a few standout tracks ( Nonstop & Can't Take a Joke). The best songs seem to have a lot of influence from the "Soundcloud rap generation," i.e triplet flows, Oogie Mane & Tay Keith Production, etc. All in all though, the album was by no mean bad, but not even close to his best work.
